Originally by: Rinnosuke I'm pretty new to this game, and to MMOs in general, but I'm canceling. This just takes up too much time, and I'm not quite sure what for. I won't be touching any other MMOs ever again. I'm not damning EVE; it's obviously had a lot of work put into it, but I can't ride along with it. I'm just wondering why other people, especially veterans, play the game. Just curious.
Go back to WoW where you belong.
Don't be a retard.
To the OP, sorry about that twit . Why do I play it? Mainly its for combat - I like the fact that it has taken me a good year to get proficient at it both in terms of skills and training as a pilot. The skill system is also interesting, the fact that the plans I set into motion over almost two years ago are starting to bear fruition now is awesome - its like planting a tree and watching it grow, first its fragile and weak, one little accident could mess it up for a while, but as time goes on it grows until it becomes strong. I started out as a starry-eyed newb with no clue as to how to fly around space much less fight against other players, and now I am a senior frigate pilot for my alliance that teaches newer ones like how to do it right and survive.
EVE's also my first MMO - I used to play mainly Renegade, Halo, and some RTS games before that, but one day I wondered, "I play all these games, but what is really the result of it? Yes, I'm alright at it and its fun, but every game ends within thirty minutes or so, and something I did three matches ago doesn't matter now, and I burned an hour of my life on it." I wanted something where if I did a great deed one day, I'd be remembered for it weeks or months down the line, or if I messed up it'd follow me just as far. This world's single shard helps that, say you were in the Great Northern War three years ago or so, find another vet from even the opposing side and you'll likely be able to share quite a few stories where you were on opposing sides. Events like FanFest or meetups only enhance this, buying old war opponents pints and laughing about mistakes you both made is quite unique from what I've seen of other MMOs.
That, and the fact that you have to work with others to get anywhere in this game makes it irresistible to me. I log onto Vent every night to a great group of guys and girls who I fight with, these people are ones who I can come home and laugh with after a long day of classes or work - in many ways, its like fighting with a great big family and having a great time doing it in the process.
I don't know, its not for everyone, but its for me.
